Insurance companies will use many different excuses to avoid making payments on a claim. One frequent excuse is that the person who’s claiming to be injured doesn’t “look like” or “act like” they’re in pain. Insurers will go to great lengths to avoid taking videos in situations where the recording will show you looking as though you’re hurting. They’ll argue that because you’re apparently able to walk into a filmed deposition in a conference room without help, you must not be in as much pain as you say you are.

This is the kind of nonsense we deal with almost daily at the Greer Law Group. Many people experience pain on a regular basis, whether from an accident or a debilitating disease, and do a very good job of hiding that pain from others. They don’t do this because they’re trying to defraud any insurance company; they do it as a matter of self-respect.

We’ve all had the experience of interacting with someone who’s in obvious pain. It’s difficult, it can be awkward, and it changes how we relate to that person. People who are chronically in pain will often go to great lengths to disguise their pain so that they can have normal interactions with others. That doesn’t mean that they’re not experiencing pain, only that they don’t wish to share their pain with the world.
