Why the Meta Cases Are So Important

Lawsuits against Meta—owner of Facebook and Instagram—allege its platforms entice vulnerable children and allow sexual predators to contact and harm them.

As Marlo Greer’s video notes, these lawsuits are vital. If successful, they will force Meta to make significant product safety changes. These changes will make it safer for all users, but especially children, to use Facebook and Instagram.

If, on the other hand, the lawsuits are not successful, then Meta is likely to continue to act as it has in the past. This means vulnerable users, such as children, are more likely to suffer.

We have reviewed these cases before, but they are so important that it’s worth revisiting them.

Filed in state and federal courts, these lawsuits include a recent $325 million New Mexico jury verdict against Meta for failing to protect users. The focus of the lawsuits has been on the product as developed and marketed by Meta. The lawsuits argue the platforms are defective. They allegedly addict young users and fail to shield them from contact with sexual predators.

On top of that, the lawsuits accuse Meta of knowingly allowing underage users to access its products. At the same time, Meta is accused of tailoring its products so that those users were drawn in, essentially becoming addicted to using them. Allowing young users into unmoderated forums alongside adult sexual predators clearly created immense, predictable harm.

Children Deserve to Be Protected

At the end of the day, these lawsuits are only partially about money. Financial penalties force corporate attention. However, real change happens when courts order Meta to upgrade safety features for younger users.

Until courts act, young Facebook and Instagram users will likely continue suffering mental and physical harm from these platforms. When that happens to someone you care for, contact Greer Law for help. We understand how devastatingly painful it can be for a child to suffer as a consequence of social media use. Whether the harm is mental or physical, Greer Law can review your case to determine if you deserve compensation. This financial compensation can fund the treatment your child needs to recover and move forward.
