Classic cars are special for many reasons, not the least of which is their frequent appearance in some of our most iconic pop songs (think “Mustang Sally,” “Pink Cadillac,” and “Little Red Corvette” – though as Marlo Greer points out in her TikTok on this subject, that song isn’t really about a car, but about . . . well, something else).

Whatever your reason for owning a classic car, you obviously need to insure it. And if you have a classic car, you may have what’s called “UIM insurance” – Under-insured or uninsured motorist insurance. This protects you if you’re involved in a crash with someone who doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t carry enough insurance to pay for your damages.

UIM Insurance is Different for Classic Cars

In most cases, for ordinary vehicles, your UIM insurance covers you – not any specific car. So, if you own three regular cars, the UIM coverage sort of follows you from car to car, depending on which one you’re driving at the time of the crash.

In a recent Colorado Supreme Court case, the owner of a classic car had both regular UIM insurance and UIM Classic Car insurance (the insurer required the owner to have the regular UIM coverage before it would issue the UIM Classic Car policy). The owner was involved in a crash while driving a car other than one of their classics, but filed a claim under their UIM Classic Car policy.

The court agreed with the insurance company and held that, unlike regular UIM insurance, UIM Classic Car insurance only applies to the classic car (or cars) listed in the policy. So keep this in mind if you’re insuring your classic cars – your UIM Classic Car coverage won’t apply if you’re driving anything other than the cars listed in the policy.
