As Marlo Greer points out in her video on this topic, the single most important thing you can do if you have a personal injury claim is never to tell anybody that you’re not injured. That is because in many cases, injuries don’t fully reveal themselves until well after the crash, fall, or accident that caused them. You may think you’re fine, only to learn later that you’re not.
But wait – that brings up another single most important thing to do. That is to make sure you get proper medical treatment for your injury or injuries. If you fail to seek treatment, you can find yourself accused of contributing to the injuries that were originally caused by someone else, and that can significantly reduce any compensation you might receive.
Which raises another single most important thing you should do, and that is to follow the directions of the medical professionals you are working with. Failing to do so can lead to you being blamed by the insurance company for your continuing pain, suffering, and medical problems.
Speaking of insurance companies, another single most important thing you can do is to refuse any first offer you get from an insurance company to resolve your claim. They will almost always go higher, especially if your claim is well-documented.
That’s another point – make sure you properly document your claim by taking photos if you were injured in a crash or in a slip-and-fall situation. Or have someone take the photos for you if you’re not able to. Take as many photos as possible, and if it’s a vehicle crash, try to show where the vehicles ended up and every place on each vehicle where there is damage. Any expert you work with, such as an attorney, doctor, mechanic, or accident reconstruction expert, may want to review those photos.
Oh, and now that we’ve mentioned experts, the single most important thing you can do if you hire one is to follow their advice. Again, if you don’t, you may be accused of making things worse for yourself.
And since we’ve mentioned crashes, if your case involves one, yet another single most important thing you can do is to call the police and secure a police report that properly finds who was at fault. Along with that, get the recording of your 911 call (or any other 911 call that relates to the crash).
As is probably clear by now, there is no one single most important thing you need to do if you’ve been injured and believe you have a claim against someone responsible for your injury. Many important things need to be taken care of.

- Get proper medical treatment for your injuries
- Follow the instructions of your doctor or medical professional
- Refuse any first settlement offer you get from the insurance company
- Take photos of where your injuries happened – the car crash, or the slip-and-fall location, for example
- Follow the advice of any experts you hire
- Call 911 if you were in a crash and get a police report as well as a copy of the 911 recording
