Lots of lawyers will be more than happy to tell you that they know lots of things. It can get downright annoying sometimes, depending on the lawyer and what they are claiming to know.
But there is one thing that a good lawyer who is in court regularly will know that most other people won’t know (and probably don’t want to know). Namely, the Court Rules that apply in their jurisdiction.
What Are Court Rules?
Every court has rules that must be followed by the parties appearing in that court. These rules will differ from one type of court to another and from one state to another.
For example, Colorado criminal courts have one set of rules, while Colorado civil courts have another set. Small claims courts in Colorado have their own set. And if you go one state over, the rules in Wyoming courts may be similar to those in Colorado, but they won’t be the same.
What do Court Rules Have to do With My Case?
As Marlo Greer points out in her TikTok on this topic, differing court rules are one reason attorneys are licensed state by state. If you’re involved in a car crash in Wyoming and need to go to court to collect compensation for your injuries and damages, you’ll most likely need to file that lawsuit in Wyoming, using an attorney who is licensed to practice in Wyoming and, ideally, has a strong command of the Wyoming civil court rules.
The same goes for Colorado. If you’re in a crash here and sue for your damages and injuries, you’ll bring that suit in a Colorado court using an attorney licensed in Colorado who understands Colorado’s civil court rules.
