If you’ve submitted a claim to an insurance company and they contact you asking for a recorded statement, alarm bells and flashing lights should immediately go off in your brain, and the next words out of your mouth should be, “I’ll have to get back to you on that.” Then give us a call.

Why? Because the insurance company isn’t asking to record you because they like the sound of your voice. They are doing it because, during the conversation, they will slip in questions designed to prompt you to give them answers that they can later use to deny or reduce the amounts you receive for your claim.

Without a lawyer by your side during the recorded conversation, you may not spot these questions. You might think you’re just having a friendly chat with a nice person from the insurance company, or just answering a boring list of questions. In fact, what’s happening is that an employee from the insurance company, whose job it is to record statements from people like you who have claims with the company, is slyly feeding you questions that can easily lead you to give answers that could hurt your claim.

So, what can a lawyer do to help? Just as the insurance company employee is trained to ask you questions that can trip you up, we’re trained to spot those questions and make sure you have a clear understanding of what’s being asked before you answer anything. And if you happen to give an answer that’s unclear and which the insurance company might use against you, we can call a time-out and give you a chance to revise your answer while the recording is still being made.
