In a recent video, Marlo Greer answers the question “Do I consider myself an ambulance chaser?” That’s the well-known phrase that many people use to refer to personal injury lawyers, and it’s obviously not a complimentary one.
As Marlo points out, “Of course I’m going to say no!”
But there’s more to it than that. What’s really important is WHY she is saying no.
From Marlo’s perspective, the reason she is a personal injury attorney is to help people. She believes this is also true for many billboard-advertised personal injury lawyers across your city.
But this is even more the case when you hire a smaller firm such as Greer Law. As Marlo says, “We are really there to help because what we care about most is you. What we want is to help you get better, and what we want is to help you get the recovery you deserve for what you lost.”
Marlo chose personal injury law because she really wanted to use her legal degree to help an “actual person, and not some corporation.” From her perspective, “to be able to do one thing or multiple things for an actual person that might be able to change their lives, or even just make that day better for them – that’s why personal injury attorneys do what they do.”
And yes, personal injury attorneys make money when their clients recover compensation. But it’s not all about the money. Marlo points out that “It’s more about the money that our clients will receive as compensation for what they lost.”
That last point is an important one to us at Greer Law. Recovering compensation when you have been injured because of someone else’s negligent or intentional acts is not like winning the lottery. When you win the lottery, you get money for no reason other than that you picked the right numbers. When you are compensated in a personal injury case, it’s giving you something back – something to make up for the harm you have suffered.
Marlo often describes how she views the compensation her clients receive. E.g., “If you’ve been injured and you’re in pain and you’ve had things taken away from you and you can’t live your life in the normal way for even a freakin’ day . . . that you’ve had that taken away from you . . . that is not winning the lottery or cashing out. That is giving back to you something you’ve lost. If I could give you back your health, I’d rather do that.”
Of course that’s not how our system works. “Our system works so that what I can do is get you money to compensate you when somebody hurts you.”
