If you have been sexually abused and decide it’s time to take action against your abuser, be prepared to be called a liar. That’s a common defense tactic that abusers use when people who they’ve abused decide they’ve had enough and start to do something about it.
As Marlo Greer points out in her TikTok on this topic, if you’ve been sexually abused and speak out about it, “everyone calls you a liar.” There’s a reason for this, and it has nothing to do with you. It’s what your abuser or abusers believe will stop you in your tracks. It’s just another form of abuse, one that they hope will keep you from pursuing your claims against them. Ultimately, if you let it, their lies about you can stand in the way of you ever healing from the abuse you’ve suffered.
The most important thing you can do when your abusers claim you’re lying about the abuse they’ve inflicted upon you is not to let it stop you from taking steps to protect yourself and to hold them accountable for their abuse. Know that there are people out there who believe you – and that there are ways to prove your claim.
In short, don’t let your abusers’ lies stop you from telling the truth.
The Greer Law Group Fights for the Rights of Survivors of Abuse
You may not have considered the fact that if someone has abused you, you may be entitled to damages from them for inflicting that abuse on you. By filing a civil lawsuit against your abuser, you can bring their abuse to light while at the same time recovering compensation that you can use to pay for the medical or mental health treatment you may need to recover from their abuse.
